Why I stopped using Canva.

Canva cut 1,271 jobs in November 2026. I had already stopped using it. Four reasons, one flyer made three ways, and the question for any business AI can copy.

In the first week of November 2026, Canva cut 1,271 jobs. I'd already stopped using it.

First, a thought for the people who lost their jobs. This isn't about them. It's about a product I used for years, why I walked away, and the question it raises for any business that sells something AI can now make.

How big is Canva?

Canva at a glance
Monthly users265 million
Paying users31 million
Revenueabout US$4 billion a year
Growthslowing for the first time in a decade
Roles cut, November 20261,271

It's still a huge, loved product. But as a user, I wanted to look at why I stopped.

Why did I stop using Canva?

1. The product. Canva was always my tool for quick designs: decks, branding, logos. It gave me complete control, and that may be the underlying problem. I'm a product manager, not a designer. I just wanted Canva to do it for me. It couldn't, so I relied on templates, because starting from scratch takes time I didn't have.

2. Enter AI. With ChatGPT or Claude Design, you can now just describe it. It's not always exactly what you want, but describe it clearly and you'll get something pretty close, or even better. Then Claude can build a whole branding system from one prompt. So yes, why would I use Canva now?

Step 2Tweak the details to suit (time), or go back and find a new templateDescribe the changes

3. Canva plugged into AI. Earlier in 2026 Canva opened itself up so assistants like Claude can use it directly. I connected it to my Claude account, hoping for Canva's templates with AI's brains. The results were pretty abysmal.

4. I just want it to look good. Something I learned as an architect: people like design, but they don't value the process. I don't want to spend an hour finalising the stroke on a line. I just want it to look good.

So, as a product manager: if you can't give me these things, and AI can, quickly, what's your value proposition? A library of templates where I pay for the good ones?

Canva's own numbers show the pressure: its growth has slowed for the first time in a decade, and in August 2026 it cut its forecast because running its AI cost more than expected.

How long does the same design take in Canva and with AI?

Take a simple job: a one-page flyer for a breakfast talk. I ran it for real, three ways, with the same three instructions each time: described to Claude Code, built in Canva by hand, and sent to Canva's own AI through an MCP.

An MCP is a connector that lets an AI like Claude use another app for you. Canva has an official one: switch it on once, and you can ask Claude to make Canva designs without opening Canva.

In Canva by hand, the job goes like this:

  1. Search "event flyer" and scroll the templates.
  2. Pick the closest one.
  3. Swap the text, colours, logo and photo.
  4. Fix the spacing that broke when you did.
  5. Still doesn't look like your brand? Back to step 1.

With AI, through Claude Code or the MCP, it is three sentences:

Make a one-page flyer for a breakfast talk on AI for small business. Thursday, 7.30am. Our brand: red and charcoal, lots of white space, logo top left.

Make the headline bigger and add a simple coffee cup icon.

Now make a matching LinkedIn post.

The same flyer made three ways, with the time each took. Claude Code: about 35 seconds. Canva by hand: 8 minutes. Canva via MCP, where Claude tells Canva's AI what to make, highlighted: 1 minute 34 seconds. Rows show the flyer, the flyer with a bigger headline and a coffee cup, and a matching LinkedIn post.

WayTime, including every fix
Described to Claude Codeabout 35 seconds
Canva's own AI, through the MCP1 minute 34 seconds
Canva by hand8 minutes, about 20 edits

In the by-hand run an AI did the clicking, so a practised Canva user would be quicker. Even so, the template still fought the brand.

The surprise was the third way. Asking Canva's own AI, through an MCP, took a minute and a half and came out well. So Canva can do this now too. You just don't get to choose the template, and the design isn't something to rave on about.

The third prompt is the point. Once AI knows your brand, every new format is one more sentence, not another template hunt.

What does it mean for your business?

If your business sells something AI can now make from a description, ask yourself what you offer that a prompt can't.

Try this. Write one sentence describing what your customers buy from you. Paste it into ChatGPT or Claude and ask it to make it. If what comes back is close, that's the part of your offer to rethink.

This is definitely more true for digital products, and I think customised software is the future. What it means for your business and your teams is another topic: change is coming.

Could a prompt copy what you sell? Book 25 minutes and bring your one sentence, and I'll tell you what I'd do about it.

Common questions

Why did Canva cut jobs in 2026? Canva cut 1,271 roles in November 2026 amid slowing growth, according to TechCrunch. In August it had already cut its forecast because running its AI cost more than expected.

Can AI replace Canva for simple designs? For a one-page flyer, describing it to Claude Code took about 35 seconds against 8 minutes by hand in Canva. Canva's own AI, through its MCP, took 1 minute 34 seconds.

What is the Canva MCP? An official connector that lets an AI assistant like Claude make Canva designs for you, without opening Canva. You switch it on once in the assistant.

How do I know if AI can copy what my business sells? Write one sentence describing what your customers buy, paste it into ChatGPT or Claude, and ask it to make it. If the result is close, that part of your offer needs rethinking.
